The Contacts captured their sixth regional title and will now represent the West at the national Telus Cup championship in Quispamsis, NB, April 18-24.

A crowd of 1,000 packed the arena and witnessed a back-and-forth battle between the host Contacts and the Manitoba-champion Wild. Winnipeg’s Caiden Daley and Saskatoon’s Quinton Ong traded first-period goals. Then Noah King tallied 7:05 into the second to give the Wild a 2-1 lead which held until the intermission.

A bouncing puck from the stick of Saskatoon’s Austin Wieler tied the game 2-2 just 1:34 into the third, but Brendan Arnold’s power-play goal 2:05 later put Winnipeg back in front.

The Wild went back to the power play soon after, but the Contacts’ Jonah Bumphrey stole momentum for his team when he earned a penalty shot after being pulled down on a shorthanded breakaway. Winnipeg goalie Mitchel Adamyk appeared to foil Bumphrey’s penalty-shot attempt with a poke check but the puck rode up and over the netminder, leading to a 3-3 tie.

The deadlock lasted through the rest of regulation, plus a 10-minute overtime. Then, 11:06 into the second overtime, Prefontaine rushed end-to-end and fired a wrist shot that went off the post and in.

The award is presented at the conclusion of the round robin. Woo contributed a goal and an assist in three preliminary games for the Wild (2-0-1). Perhaps more importantly, he was rock-steady defensively and led his team with poise and composure on the back end.

In recognition of his MVP performance, Woo receives the $500 Telus Cup Scholarship Award.

Rylan Bettens and Jesse Gibbons scored for the Wild, who led 1-0 going into the third period. Tyler Heidt had the lone reply for the Contacts, who had already clinched a spot in the final the night before.

Winnipeg goalie Mitch Adamyk made 30 saves and held the fort, especially in the third, when the Contacts outshot the Wild 17-5. Isaac LaBelle made 26 saves for Saskatoon.

Elijah Loon-Stewardson, Hunter Buzzi and Adam Withers scored for the Thistles who led 3-0 before Notre Dame’s Dominic Schmiemann finally broke Aiken’s shutout at 2:26 of the third period. Louden Schaufler scored the Hounds’ other goal with netminder Reid Cooper pulled in favour of an extra attacker.

Buzzi and Withers scored power-play goals 1:10 apart in the second period to give Kenora a 3-0 lead and some breathing room.

Cooper made 25 saves for the Hounds.

Saskatoon (2-0-0) has the tournament’s only perfect record following Friday’s 5-1 win over the Saskatchewan-champion Notre Dame Hounds (0-2-0) at Rod Hamm Memorial Arena. Although the Hounds won’t play beyond the round-robin, which wraps up Saturday, both the Winnipeg Wild (1-0-1) and the Kenora Thistles (0-1-1) have a shot at qualifying for the final.

Saturday’s final round-robin action sees Kenora play Notre Dame at noon, followed by Saskatoon and Winnipeg at 3:30 p.m.

Sunday’s final is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Rod Hamm Memorial. The winner will represent the West region at the national Telus Cup championship in Quispamsis, NB, April 18-24.
